A Matter of Honor
by Amy McWilliams (McAmy)
A Note on Archiving:
A Matter of Honor is a completed three-book, novel-length fic (not a trilogy, simply a narrative with three parts--a triple-decker, for fans of nineteenth-century British fiction). It has been posted in its entirety on the Yahoo! groups When I Kissed the Teacher and The Snapefic Liberation Front; it now appears complete only at this site. If you see it hosted elsewhere, please let me know.
Please do not archive this story elsewhere. You may, of course, link to it here.
A Matter of Honor is ©2001-2002 by Amy McWilliams (McAmy). It was originally posted from 1 December 2001 to 15 March 2002 at the When I Kissed the Teacher Yahoo! group.
Rating:
The story proper is somewhere between PG and R, with a little violence, a little language, and some suggestion of sex. There are also three "extra" chapters to book 3 that are smutty goodness and rated R. The sex therein contains no slash, no BDSM, etc. These chapters have been re-inserted in their proper places here, but with the option to skip them for those who don't want to read the higher rating. They contain nothing absolutely necessary to the plot as a whole.
Disclaimer:
Everything borrowed from the Harry Potter novels belongs to J. K. Rowling.

Summary:
A quick summary (hopefully not giving too much away): In book 1, Hermione completes an honors project in her seventh year at Hogwarts. The subject is Potions, the advisor is Professor Snape. Book 2 finds Hermione at college for two years, and as the wizarding world faces some hard times, Hermione has to deal with the fact that she feels helpless. She and Snape remain in contact, and begin to realize that they need each other. In book 3, Hermione returns to Hogwarts as the new Arithmancy professor. She and Snape begin to work on different Potions projects together, and fall in love (natch), while Snape--and later Hermione--work to track down Lucius Malfoy.
Author's
Note:
When I was
writing, I had read many of the Snape fics available at When I Kissed
the Teacher, fanfiction.net, and elsewhere online, primarily the
ones involving Hermione. I'm sure that I've been influenced by them
all, to one degree or another. When I have consciously borrowed
from a story, however, I have made certain to credit the author
in the author's notes for that chapter. Most such borrowingings
have since been given their blessing.
I want,
however, to credit the authors and stories that have consciously
guided my own responses to these characters and helped me to find
the story I wanted to tell. When I began my own fic, my greatest
debts were to three fics: 1) Riley's Pawn to Queen, which
made me want to give them a less harrowing experience during Hermione's
school days, 2) Lilith Morgana's No Angel, which made me
want to write a romance for them (and it is thanks to her encouragement
that I actually started writing this at all), and 3) R. J. Anderson's
Darkness & Light trilogy, which still stands as the best
multi-part Snape fic I've ever read.
Additional
influences and favorites from before I began to write include Strega
Brava (so many lovely short stories that I can no longer pick only
a couple to name), Clare & Anne (A Higher Price), Elaryn
("Snapeology"), Scorpio Grudge (The Coachwhip),
and Sphinx ("Letter from Exile One Merciful Morning,"
A Decoding of the Heart, "To Sever the Lining from a
Cloud").
As I continued
writing, I had the pleasure of being surrounded by all of the writers
on two Yahoo! groups: When I Kissed the Teacher and The Snapefic
Liberation Front. I thank everyone there, readers and writers alike,
for their company, and I thank especially the other authors who
became favorites of mine, and who influenced me along the way, most
notably Auror Borealis, Anna, and Abby.
A special
thanks to those who were willing to read and review as this was
being written, to Renee and my sister for indulging me, and to everybody
who has taken the time to tell me that they liked my story.
