The Bad Guys: THE DEVIL IN MR. SMITH

In the Port Charles public eye Frank Smith was a respectable businessman, a philanthropist who used his vast wealth for the betterment of the community. Few knew Smith had built his empire on the rotting foundation of double dealing, dirty money and murder. Those who were unfortunate enough to discover his underworld connections--like Laura Baldwin and Luke Spencer and Joe Kelly--lived in constant fear for their lives and the lives of their loved ones.

Frank Smith had only two things in life he cherished, his daughter Jennifer and a little black book that contained the key to a fortune in gold. Luke Spencer had broken the heart of the first and stolen the second. Luke was doubly damned and so was his little love Laura. Smith's hired guns were gaining on them fast.

Joe Kelly was just a good guy who wanted to get to the bottom of Smith's criminal activities. But he got too close to the truth and was marked for death. His dad, Paddy, got it instead and Joe stopped being nice, started getting tough and decided to get even. Joe, with the help of Luke's sister Bobbi and Laura's mom Lesley, plotted a kidnapping caper. They'd nab Jennifer and hang on to her until Frank Smith delivered Luke and Laura to them. Their plan backfired but they had scared Smith enough to make him call off his hit men (see story on page 41), and now Smith found himself in trouble. His superior in the Organization was tired of waiting. He wanted the Luke and Laura affair sewn up.

Smith's reign of terror was nearly over. His mask of respectability had slipped and soon all of Port Charles would know the truth. If he didn't get out of the country fast he'd be a permanent Port Charles resident--six feet under.

While his loyal henchman, Ron (Eddie Zamit) stood by, Frank Smith (George Gaynes) put out the order for Luke and Laura's elimination. With his vast power and money he was sure he'd succeed.

Before all the trouble began, Luke was engaged to Mr. Smith's daughter Jennifer (at right). The two fiances chat here with Smith while Luke's Aunt Ruby looks on.
