GH: MORE LUCKY SHOCKERS

As GENERAL HOSPITAL viewers learned last week, Lucky is very much alive--and being held captive. Who's behind this plot? "All I can say is, Lucky's captor will be revealed to the audience this week," demurs Head Writer Robert Guza, Jr. "And it will definitely be a shock."

Shocking, too, is the official report on the blaze that "killed" Lucky. "It's revealed to Luke and Laura that the fire was an accident, not arson," continues the scribe. "Which means that the thing they could cling to--finding out who did this--has been taken away from them. There's no place for them to put their grief and sorrow. Luke and Laura are spiraling further and further apart."

On Monday of this week, Luke sought solace in the arms of hooker-turned-restaurateur Tammy. "Luke and Tammy sleeping together is a prelude to something else," teases Guza. (An adventure with Felicia?)

Laura's future is up in the air, as well. "We are bringing her to her knees," previews Guza. "Laura's going to have some major, major stuff to deal with." As will the rest of the players involved in this tragedy. "The people who matter most still believe Lucky is dead," says Guza. "And as a result, they are going off on these various courses. What's going to happen when they find out they're wrong?

"Luke [Anthony Geary] and Tammy [Patricia Healy] sleeping together is a prelude to something else."

LUKE AND LAURA,
GENERAL HOSPITAL

Relationship Milestone: Discussing Divorce
The Scene: After all these years, a wedge has been driven between daytime's legendary couple that--at the moment, at least--seems irreparable. The couple had been drifting apart, what with Laura off to the Carolinas to visit Lesley and Luke hitting the road for a spell. But last year, Laura's son, Nikolas, told half brother Lucky that Luke raped their mother years ago, and things haven't been the same since.
Stumbling Blocks: Numerous, but the largest is, of course, Stefan Cassadine. Stefan has been in love with Laura since they conceived Nikolas years ago in Greece. Stefan is also Luke's mortal foe, and when Laura and Nikolas reconciled, Stefan came along with the package. As Luke so eloquently put it, "My wife is dating my enemy." That's gotta hurt.
Current Status: Separated. Miscommunication hasn't helped: Laura blames Luke for walking out on their marriage; he claims that she kicked him out. The pair recently mentioned the "D" word; Luke offered child support for their daughter, Lesley Lu; and Laura told Stefan that she's ready to reclaim her own life.
The Odds: Not so good. The fact that they've just lost Lucky could be the straw that finally breaks the supercouple's backs.

Caption: The outlook is gloomy for GH's Luke (Anthony Geary) and Laura (Genie Francis).

Is Luke and Laura's Marriage all wet?

Luke and Laura

After spending over a decade running from mobster Frank Smith, Luke and Laura believed that their marriage could survive against all odds. But the one thing they didn't count on was the past catching up with them. When Luke discovered that Laura had a love child with Stefan Cassadine, it was a betrayal he just couldn't stomach. Now, he's keeping his distance while she tests the water with her former lover. In other words, things look bleak. But the tides are as unpredictable as Luke himself. And so long as his and Laura's hearts beat, no one should count them out. Marriage may not be forever, but Luke and Laura's love... that is.

Before being cast as the son of Luke's Greco-Russian enemy, Mikkos, Nichols had the chance to portray Damian Smith, offspring of the Spencer clan's other adversary, Frank.

Is something happening to his family the worst thing that can happen to Luke? Anthony Geary replies:

"Yes, I think the worst thing that could happen to Luke is that someone he feels responsible for is injured or hurt. He is a protector by nature."

Among other comments, Carolyn Hinsey says this: "And from the It's About Time This Guy Got a Date department: How about Luke and Felicia getting together on GENERAL HOSPITAL? Anthony Geary and Kristina Wagner are at their very best with each other, playful and smiling. GH is doing a s-l-o-w build, giving them lots of conversations about how they miss the old action-adventure days. So if something does happen, it won't come out of left field like so many other soap romances."

The Good-bye Guy

As P.C.'s summer draws to a close, you can expect Luke Spencer to head out of Dodge. That's because his portrayer, Anthony Geary, normally takes an extended vacation through mid-fall. This past year, Luke--upon hearing Laura testify at Stefan's murder trial and realizing she and Stefan had an affair years earlier--stormed out of town. After cooling off for a couple of months, Luke returned home, but his relationship with Laura only worsened.

GENERAL HOSPITAL
Luke Vs. Stefan
Before Stefan, no one thought daytime's number-one supercouple would ever break up. Well, with each day, Luke and Laura are inching closer and closer to divorce court--thanks to the Greek god. Luke can't forgive Laura for falling in love with Stefan during her years away from Port Charles. Nor can he forget that Laura lied to him about the fact that Stefan is the father of her son Nikolas. Worst of all, Luke can also see that his wife is still in love with Stefan. And raising the stakes even higher, Stefan indirectly told Luke and Laura's son Lucky about Luke's rape of Laura 20 years ago. The Spencer/Cassadine war, which began in the 1980s, will no doubt continue into the new millennium. The big question is, on whose side will Laura wind up?

Thumbs Up! GENERAL HOSPITAL Mix and Match

GENERAL HOSPITAL doesn't have to bring on a parade of new faces when the show needs a tweak--it just reconfigures its formidable stable of existing talent.

Take Luke and Felicia. Although each is ensconced in his/her own plot, GH traded on their innate connection and turned it into a story all its own. Fed up with Mac's bemused interest in her writing of Lila's memoirs, Felicia has turned to kindred free spirit Luke for encouragement and understanding. For his part, Luke's friendship with Felicia provides him with one of the few steady influences in his tumultuous life....

Luke & Laura - general hospital

On November 16 and 17, 1981, Laura Baldwin and Luke Spencer's glorious wedding made history by becoming the most-watched soap event ever--and it still holds that crown. Their happiness was short-lived when Laura suddenly disappeared and was presumed dead. Luke was devastated. Two years later, she suddenly reappeared. Forced to go on the run for several years, Luke, Laura, and Lucky found themselves back in Port Charles in 1993...and their daughter Lulu was born there. However, happiness was fleeting...and daytime's grandest romance was ripped apart by a lie. Laura had hidden the fact that she and Stefan Cassadine had had a son--Nikolas. When Luke found out about this betrayal, he fell apart, as did their marriage. Now they believe Lucky is dead and Laura is with Stefan. This isn't how the love of Luke and Laura should be.

GENERAL HOSPITAL
Cold Miser

Heat and passion were the last things on Mikkos Cassadine's maniacal agenda when he struck fear into the hearts of global leaders by putting Port Charles into a deep freeze. But as the common enemy of Luke and Laura, that's exactly what the villain caused. While the couple fought to stop his madness, they took a look at some of their own insanity--in particular, Luke's rape of Laura. She confessed that even then she had loved him. Once the air between them had cleared, the soil beneath them was fertile for romance. The lovers took advantage of the island paradise beneath which Mikkos ruled, enjoying sensual delights during the day and stalking the lunatic at night. In the end, their teamwork paid off and taught them that they were better together, forever. After saving the world nad dispatching Mikkos, the two said "I do" and became one.

Hit... Skulduggery (pardon the expression) on GH

FELICIA DIDN'T THINK IT WAS AT ALL A LAUGHING MATTER WHEN Luke withdrew not one but two skulls from the crypt drawer that supposedly containted the remains of George Alan Quartermaine on General Hospital. But thanks to writer Patrick Mulcahey's gray matter and Anthony Geary's (Luke) equally cerebral wit and flawless comic timing, it was a howl.

Luke's life has been short on merriment lately--indeed, Geary won this year's Daytime Emmy as Outstanding Lead Actor on the strength of his character's searing emotional anguish. So it was most welcome to see that mischievous twinkle back in Luke's eyes, and to watch FElicia's exasperation as she tried to duck the volley of bon mots he deftly lobbed at her with merciless abandon. To his further credit, Geary kept a lid (oops!) on exaggerated silliness, even underplaying his delivery of some knee-slappers and letting the words and his own exhilaration shrine--umm, shine on their own. --Linda Susman

GH's Luke Spencer
Because Luke and Laura aren't officially divorced, we feel that we can still rate him as a husband. Actually, Luke is a tough call. He's a sneak, a mobster, even a killer, but one thing he has never been in all the years he and Laura have been together is a cheater. One thing that has never wavered was his down-to-the-soul love for his wife. When Laura finally confessed that Nikolas was her son and Stefan his father, the deep hurt was drawn on Luke's face in broad strokes...and hasn't left since.

GH's Anthony Geary
While helping Felicia, Luke came out of his shell and had a reason to live!

Every longtime GENERAL HOSPITAL viewer is privy to a little secret, one that is faithfully whispered into the ears of all who listen to the show's compelling dialogue. The hushed proclamation that is heard: Anthony Geary (Luke) is an artistic genius! An exaggeration? Not in the least! Anyone with a brain can detect hte magnificence of Geary's ad-libs and brilliance for subtext, but only a select few can truly appreciate the actor's qualities as a scholarly thespian. His particular talent was recently displayed throughout Luke and Felicia's investigation of Lila Quartermaine's past.

Geary was in rare form, perfecting not only Luke's comical side, but his ability to emote untainted love. The actor effortlessly transformed Luke from a man with no reason to live because of the death of his son Lucky, to a man celebrating life and all its surrounding beauty (namely Felicia)!

Luke is the kind of character who keeps viewers wondering what he'll do next!

What allows Luke to endure is his portrayer--a man who is not afraid to take chances. Mr. Geary, you are truly a teacher to your peers and a legend among Hollywood's blinding stars.

Anthony Geary's Co-Star Speaks Out...

Jonathan Jackson, who played Luke's son Lucky on GENERAL HOSPITAL, recently had this to say: "I was 11 years old when I started on the show, and he kind of took me under his wing. He's just an incredibly awesome person, and he's been great to me. Every day was a blast. He's incredibly witty, a smart genius actor. He was just always incredibly cool to me. We always had a great time, from the first day to the last day. It was just a blast. I couldn't have asked for a better work environment than working with him."

GH'S ROY SAVES LUKE FROM FAISON

TALK ABOUT HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF. Twenty years ago, Roy DiLucca did best friend Luke a favor when he carried out a mob hit on Sen. Mitch Williams that went awry and ultimately landed Roy behind bars until a few weeks ago. This week on General Hospital, Luke discovers that Roy didn't die in that shooting, as was generally believed, when Roy once again saves Luke's neck.

Luke's jeopardy comes from Faison, whom Luke overhears expressing interest in Felicia. Luke's angry response is to choke Faison into unconsciouness. When Faison comes to, he goes to Luke's and pulls a gun. Having just filled in Bobbie on what happened to him since he was presumed killed, Roy arrives at the club, knocks out Faison, then helps Luke deal with the unconscious body.

Roy reveals himself to Luke before Bobbie has a chance to prepare him; like his sister, "Luke has a similar conflict," GH head writer Robert Guza Jr. says. "He is like, 'Oh, my god, you're back! But why the hell didn't you say anything?' The difference for luke is that Luke was supposed to do the hit, and Roy offered to do this thing for him. As a result, Roy nearly died, lost the love of his life and 20 years from his life. So if Luke Spencer ever felt guilt, he would feel it now."

Bobbie learns that Luke and Roy have seen each other again when she rushes to the club to break the news. Although Luke suspects that this development may impact Bobbie's plan to marry Jerry, she insists that she has no intention of changing her mind.

Meanwhile, Roy pays a visit to Sonny, and explains his earlier life of crime. Meanwhile, Bobbie clues in Felicia about their encounter. Jerry, however, is one key person who is still in the dark about Roy's return from the dead.
